PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
Photodynamic therapy (PDT or photodynamic therapy) uses not only the use of blue light but also the oxygen present in the tissue and photosensitizing agents. The therapy involves two phases: the first phase in which the doctor applies aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) to the areas to be treated, which is a selective photosensitizing substance that identifies and isolates the target to be hit, and a second phase in which the patient is exposed to the light of a specific lamp. This light is able to hit diseased cells and minimize damage to healthy tissue. In practice, 5-ALA acid acts as a "selective catalyst" for the areas to be treated while preserving healthy skin.
The therapeutic indications of phototherapy are multiple:
ACNE
After a cycle of phototherapy for cases of mild or moderate acne, or photodynamic therapy for more severe cases, there is a significant decrease in the size of the sebaceous glands and, consequently, in the production of sebum with the clinical effect of a skin less greasy, less shiny and with less dilated pores. There is also a slowdown in bacterial proliferation, in particular of Propionibacterium acnes, the bacterium most responsible for acne vulgaris, with a significant improvement in acne lesions.PHOTOAGING OF THE SKIN
PDT, by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, fundamental substances for a more toned and compact appearance of the skin, is useful for counteracting photoaging of the skin, in particular for the treatment of fine and thin wrinkles present in the cheek, in the area around the eyes and periorbital. The skin of the face appears more relaxed and elastic.ACTINIC KERATOSES
Photodynamic therapy (phototherapy) is one of the first choice therapies for the treatment of actinic keratoses, dry patches of skin thickening that affect areas exposed to solar radiation (face, scalp, limbs). Thanks to the accumulation of the photosensitizer at the lesion level with subsequent transient production of reactive forms of oxygen (ROS), only the target cells are destroyed. After treatment with photodynamic therapy, the cells affected by keratosis are replaced by healthy cells and the skin appears smoother and younger.
